STATE OF TEXAS OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GEORGE W, BUSH GOVERNOR
April 22, 1999
Mr. Gilbert Garza Youth Achievement Foundation, Inc. 6017 Randolph Boulevard San Antonio, TX 78233-5719
Dear Mr. Garza:
I deeply appreciate your assistance in developing priorities for mentoring in Texas.
Mentoring is a key component of my Lone Star Leaders initiative that aims to surround young people with the resources that experts say matter most in promoting right choices. I am committed to expanding quality, one-on-one mentoring in Texas, and your contributions will help lay the groundwork we need to reach that goal. I support mentoring for a simple reason: it works. Done right, mentoring markedly
advances kids’ life prospects and helps them not only dream big dreams, but also achieve them. As Fortune Magazine reported, “The number one indicator of success for a child is a good relationship with a caring adult.” Staff from the Governor’s Mentoring Initiative, and a small planning group of your peers, will incorporate your suggestions into a strategic plan to expand and improve mentoring in Texas. I’m sure we will also continue to consult you for ongoing direction and input on various mentoring-related issues. Thank you for giving your experience, time and wisdom in shaping this important initiative. Government can help provide resources to assist parents and mentors and, with your valuable assistance, we will.
Sincerely,
GEORGE W.BUSH
