To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is in reference to Ms. Maritza Roman, Program Director of the after-school One-On-One Tutoring Program at Pilgrim Elementary School. The program began in December of the 2001-2002 school year.

Ms. Roman coordinated this program. She initially approached me in the fall of 2001 with the idea of providing extra assistance to our students by supporting their intellectual and social development. She proposed a weekly after-school program that included academic tutoring, a leadership session, and a student activity period. The focus of the academic tutoring was to address the students’ areas of need. The leadership session of the program provided the students with moral and academic guidance as well as helping the students acquire basic positive practices. She even set up a Saturday field trip to Rice University, where the majority of the mentors attended, for the students and parents. The students, parents and mentors had an opportunity to interact as well as introducing the goal of attending an university in the future.

Ms Roman coordinated and directed the One-On-One Program with true professionalism. She consistently demonstrated an organized and caring manner with students, mentors and parents. She arrived early, before the students and mentors, to prepare and set up the varied lessons for each child, and stayed late talking to students, parents, and mentors. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Ms. Roman. She is professional, efficient, organized and very loving and kind with our children. I truly believe she has all of our students’ best interests in mind implementing this program.

Therefore, I am requesting Ms. Maritza Roman to continue as Program Director of the One-On-One Tutoring Program this 2002-2003 school year. She works well with our student and parents. In addition, she supports the goals and objectives of Pilgrim Elementary School as well as the Houston Independent School District.
